Plantation Project

1700's Southern Colonial Plantation Model Project

Directions: Create a model of a Southern plantation from the 1700's.  Write a summary that explains what your model shows, and how each part was used or was important to the functioning of a Southern plantation.  Research to find out where each part should be located, what it looked like, and how it was used.

Size: No larger than a desk top (about 30 x 15 inches)

crop field on a plantationMaterials possibilities: art paper, small milk cartons or boxes, popsicle sticks, wooden clothespins, toothpicks, string, cloth, soil, paint, sticks, glue, sandpaper, plastic people or animals, clay, etc.

Each model plantation will need:

  • Whipping post (5)
  • Big House (10)
  • Slave Quarters (10)
  • 1 cash crop field - please label crop type (10)
  • Garden (for Big House) (10)
  • Blacksmith shop (10)
  • Dock (10)
  • Stable (10)

Points are also awarded for:

  • Labels on model (10)
  • Correct size (5)
  • Creativity (10)

Summary:

  • Lists all of the components in the model with a description of their purposes. (30)
  • Is written or typed with correct conventions and sentence fluency (20)
