Book Talk

Directions:

Be prepared to speak about your book in front of the class. You may use note cards or a piece of paper as a reminder list. You must include all of the required elements, plus three of the suggested elements. You must also bring your book to school to show to the class.

Required Elements for Book Talk:

  • Show the book to the audience.
  • State the title of your book.
  • Tell the name of the author and illustrator (if applicable).
  • Rate the book on a scale of 1-5 (1 is "I hated this book" and 5 is "This is one of the best I've ever read.") and tell why you gave it that rating. (What did you like or dislike about the book?)
  • Classify the reading difficulty as Easy, Just Right, or Challenging. (Easy books are books that are quick-reads, have no difficult words, and you understood everything you read right away. Just right books have about two to three words per chapter that you didn't know already, take several hours to read, and you understand what is going on, but have to stop and think about it at times. Challenging books have one or more words per page that you don't know, take many hours or days to read, and have ideas that are difficult to understand.) Tell what made the book easy, just right, or challenging for you.
  • Do ANY THREE of the "Suggested Elements" choices.

Suggested Elements for Book Talk (Pick THREE):

  • Tell your favorite part of the book you read, and why it is your favorite part.
  • Tell why you picked this book to read.
  • Show your favorite illustration, and tell why you like it best.
  • Tell the titles of other books you have read by this author, and what you like about that author's writing.
  • Would you recommend this book to your friends? Why or why not?
  • Describe your favorite character, and tell why you liked him or her best.
