Geometric Figures Review Activity

Objectives:

  • Review basic geometric figures
  • Relate basic geometric figures to three-dimensional, real-world objects that exemplify the geometric figure
  • Demonstrate understanding of the attributes that define basic geometric figures
  • Use digital camera, photo editing software, and slide show applications to create and present findings

Materials:

  • digital camera(s)
  • computers with software that will allow creation of a slide-show type presentation
  • paper, pencils
  • student Geometric Figure Presentation check list
  • Geometric Figure Presentation Rubric

Student Activities:

1. Learn the basic geometric figures and their attributes.

2. Divide the students into teams (2 or 3 per team). Assign each team one to four geometric figures.

3. In teams, the students go out to the playground or other school property and find an object that uses or suggests the team's assigned geometric figure(s). Write down the object, location, and geometric figure it shows. One or more objects per figure may be assigned at the teacher's discretion.

4. Learn or review the proper way to use a digital camera. (alternately, use a regular camera, develop pictures, and scan into digital format)

5. Teams will be released to take a digital picture(s) of the objects they have properly written down from step 3. Giving the teams a time limit, or allowing them to do this during recess or other "free" time will help keep them on-task.

6. Digital pictures should be stored on one disk per team, or downloaded into a folder assigned to that team. The goal is to make the pictures easily retrievable for the team to import into a presentation format such as Power Point, AppleWorks Drawing or Slideshow, etc.

7. Once a team has taken their pictures, they are to create a presentation that includes the following information on each "page" or "slide":

  • Geometric figure represented
  • Defining attributes of that figure
  • Picture (photo) of one or more objects that use or suggest the geometric figure
  • Sentence explaining what the object(s) in the photo is, and how it relates to the geometric figure.

8. When all teams' presentations are complete (or when the due-date has arrived), they will share their presentation with the rest of the class, and/or with another group of students or guests.

9. Presentations will be scored using the Geometric Figure Presentation Rubric.

End Product:

  • Students will create a pictoral guide to various geometric figures as they appear in the "real world".
  • Students will present their guide pages to the whole class, and possibly to other classes.
  • Students will use the guide as a review for the geometry test.
