Legend Literature

Definition of "legend": A story based on either real or supposedly real individuals and their marvelous deeds.

Elements of Legend Literature:

1. Characters that are "larger than life" (Examples: King Arthur, Lancelot, Robin Hood, Brom Bones)

2. Plot is a mixture of realism and fantasy.

3. Supposedly a true story about someone who lived long ago (we usually disbelieve them today, but in ancient and prior times, these stories were considered factual).

4. Usually handed down from one generation to the next orally (aloud), and then written down much later.

  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
