Persuasive Text

Persuasive Text: May appear as either narrative or expository, but the author has a specific idea or point of view that they want the reader to agree with. Examples of persuasive text are advertisements, reviews of books or movies, and political campaign propaganda. Persuasive text almost always includes facts and strong words that support the author's opinion.

Persuasive elements:

  • Author bias - the opinion or point-of-view that the author holds
  • Strong statements (also called loaded words) - the words and phrases that get the reader emotionally involved in the text; these may be strong positive statements about the author's opinion, or strong negative statements about the opposing points-of-view
  • Supporting details - the specific, exact information that the author uses to convince the reader to agree with her/his opinion; these are often facts gathered through research, or statements made by experts that support the author's opinion
