Muscular and Nervous Systems study guide key

Know the answers to these questions:

  1. About how many muscles are in a human body? over 600
  2. What are the three kinds of muscles? smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, skeletal muscles
  3. Which muscles are also called “voluntary muscles” and what does that mean? Skeletal muscles are called voluntary muscles because you can control when they move.
  4. Which muscles are also called “involuntary muscles” and what does that mean? Smooth muscles are called involuntary muscles because they move without you telling them to move.
  5. Where do you find cardiac muscles? in your heart
  6. Where do you find smooth muscles? in your stomach and intestines
  7. Where do you find skeletal muscles? attached to your bones, they let you move your body
  8. What controls your body’s movements and thoughts? your brain
  9. How are messages sent from your brain to your muscles, and also from your muscles to your brain? Messages are sent through the spinal cord and nerves.
  10. What are three things you should do to keep your brain healthy? (any 3 of these):
    • eat healthy foods
    • wear a helmet when biking or skating
    • exercise
    • do challenging mental activities like reading, puzzles, playing music, & making art
    • don’t drink alcohol
    • don’t take drugs
    • don’t use tobacco
