Black Catholics Research Project

(8th grade)

Focus: research, write sentences using the five verb moods to describe famous African American Catholics

(Writing 8.2, 8.4, 8.5, 8.6, 8.7, 8.8, 8.10; Language 8.1, 8.2)

Directions:

  • Read and annotate the Leaven article "Mixed-ish Family" and participate in a class discussion about race-relations in American society today.
  • Research to complete the Research Sheet about your assigned famous Catholic. Use the links below as a starting point to gather information. You will need at least 20 facts about your person. Use the Source Record Sheet to keep track of the sources of your information. You should use at least 3 sources. Color-code your facts to match your sources. You will be expected to use in-text citations later.
  • Print a clear, focused picture of your assigned person.
  • Draft two sentences per "verb mood" that give information about your person's life and experiences. Include a parenthetical citation at the end of each sentence. Do not use any signal phrases.
  • Peer revise & edit using the directions and your notes on verb moods.
  • Type a final copy on the form provided in Google Classroom. Print it.
  • Type and print a Works Cited page using MLA format for the sources you used.
  • Create a poster that includes your 10 sentences and a picture of your assigned person. Glue or tape your Works Cited to the back of the poster.
