Modern Idolatry

  • Review Exodus 32. Discuss that the bull was an idol of Israel’s pagan (those who don’t believe in the one, true God) neighbors.
  • Discuss the following:
    • idolatry is the worship of false gods (these can be people, places, objects, or activities)
    • God is the only one who is worthy of the ultimate expression of human faith, hope, and love, because God is the creator of all things.
    • What people, places, things, or activities do people idolize today?
    • In worshipping those false gods, people expect to find ultimate happiness and well-being. In reality, however, such idolatry brings only deep disappointment and frustration, because no creation is capable of giving what God alone can give – eternal life.
  • Use pictures from magazines or newspapers to make a collage. Your collage should show examples of modern false gods. It needs to cover the paper with images/words.
  • Write a lengthy one-paragraph reflection about the allure of modern idols. Some things to include:
    • What are some examples of modern idols that many people “worship” today?
    • Although they don’t usually worship these idols in a religious way, in what way do these idols take the place that God should have in people’s lives?
    • Why are these idols important to people or why do they “worship” these idols?
    • What are the negative consequences of putting these idols before God in our lives?
    • What is one modern idol that you struggle with?
    • What is something specific you can do to make this idol less important in your life?
    • What is something specific you can do to give God more of your worship?
